Building Creative Briefs That Actually Convert

Four elements of a brief — the audience's real objection, prior test data, platform-native norms, and kill criteria — without which a creative team is guessing blind.

A weak creative brief is one of the most common — and most easily fixable — reasons a campaign underperforms, not because the media buying was wrong, but because the creative team never got what it needed to build the right product in the first place.

Start with the audience's real objection

A brief that says "emphasize the discount" gives less to work with than one that says "the audience's real doubt is trust in a new brand — address it directly." Creative built on a real objection consistently beats creative built on a generic feature list.

Share real data from past tests

Even a short summary of what worked and what failed lets the creative team work off real signal instead of guessing blind on every new brief, and consistently shortens the path to a working creative.

Specify platform content norms, not just technical specs

A brief that lists only aspect ratio and file size, without mentioning that the platform's native content style leans toward handheld, unpolished video, often comes back as a technically correct but weak-performing polished clip.

Write kill criteria in advance

Defining what "not working" looks like — a specific CTR or CPA threshold — before the creative goes live removes the drawn-out, vague decision of whether to keep testing a mediocre result.

In short

  • Build the brief around the audience's real objection, not just the offer's features.
  • Share past test data, not just instructions.
  • Specify the platform's native content norms, not just technical specs.
  • Fix kill criteria before the creative goes live.

The point isn't to copy the whole setup — it's to understand which part of it actually drives the result.
